The coast

Belle Mare is a long, low-rise stretch of the East coast known for some of Mauritius's whitest sand and a wide turquoise lagoon protected by a distant reef.

It has a calmer, more upmarket feel than the busy north, anchored by a cluster of five-star resorts, golf courses and a famous public beach backed by casuarina and filao trees. The coastline catches the morning sun and the cooling south-east trade winds, which keep afternoons fresh and feed steady kitesurfing and windsurfing conditions. It suits couples, families and golfers after a quieter, scenic base, with easy day-trip access to the wild south-east, Île aux Cerfs and the central plateau.

One of the largest properties on the beach, sitting behind a long frontage in the middle of the Belle Mare stretch, with two championship golf courses attached to the estate. Big enough that the gate matters — we confirm which reception before the day rather than guess.

Getting to Belle Mare

45–60minutes
from SSR

SSR International Airport sits in the south-east, so Belle Mare is roughly a 45-60 minute drive north up the east coast, depending on traffic. There is no convenient public transport for visitors, so the simplest option is a pre-booked private transfer that meets you on arrival and drives you door-to-door. A rental car or private driver makes day trips easy.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Belle Mare from the airport?

Belle Mare is about 45 to 60 minutes by road from SSR International Airport in the south-east, covering roughly 40-50 km up the east coast. A pre-booked private transfer is the easiest way to arrive, with a driver meeting you in the arrivals hall.

What is Belle Mare known for?

Belle Mare is known for its exceptionally long white-sand beach, a wide turquoise lagoon, championship golf courses and a concentration of five-star resorts. It has a quieter, more refined feel than the north and is a launch point for boat trips to Île aux Cerfs.

What is the best beach in Belle Mare?

Belle Mare Public Beach is the standout: a long stretch of soft white sand with calm, shallow lagoon water and shade from filao trees, popular for swimming and picnics. Palmar and the Poste de Flacq area nearby are quieter alternatives.

When is the best time to visit Belle Mare?

May to December brings cooler, drier weather and reliable south-east trade winds that are ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The warmer summer months (December to April) are better for calm-water swimming, though they can be more humid with occasional rain.

What side of Mauritius is Belle Mare on?

The east. That matters more than it sounds: the east coast catches the prevailing south-east trade winds, so the lagoon runs cooler and breezier than the north or west, and is at its calmest roughly from November to April. It is also why the east is the island’s kitesurfing and sailing coast.

Is Belle Mare, Mauritius nice?

It is one of the longest white-sand beaches on the island — several kilometres of it — with a wide, shallow turquoise lagoon held back by a distant reef, so the water stays calm and swimmable. Quiet on weekdays, busy with Mauritian families at weekends. The honest trade-off against the north is that there is no nightlife strip: Belle Mare is beach, lagoon and resorts.

Which country is Belle Mare in?

Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean roughly 2,000 km off the south-east coast of Africa and 900 km east of Madagascar. Belle Mare sits in the district of Flacq on its east coast.

Is Belle Mare beach public?

Yes. Every beach in Mauritius is public up to the high-water mark, the stretches in front of the resorts included. Belle Mare has a large free public beach with casuarina shade, parking and food vans at weekends.

Do you pick up from hotels in Belle Mare?

Yes — Belle Mare is our home coast, so it is the shortest drive of our day. We collect from every hotel on this page and from villas, guesthouses and Airbnbs along the same stretch, at a fixed price per vehicle rather than per person.
